Who would work out with an iPhone? Or a Zune, for that matter?

You don’t panic at the thought of strapping a $600 device to your arm to go for a run. Sound like you? Because according to this picture, there are people brave enough to wear their iPhone proudly on their arm, muggers be danged.

Neither the iPhone nor the Zune seems to have been designed with a trip to the gym in mind. They’re pretty big, and in the iPhone’s case, my heart rate would already be elevated by the terror I felt worrying about breaking it. However, based on the number of questions we get about it, and the number of workout accessories available, there’s obviously a large group of people that use their Zune or iPhone to work out. So, in answer, here’s how to use Podfitness with your iPhone or Zune.

If you want to use Podfitness with your iPhone, it’s shockingly simple. When syncing, just check the box to sync your “Podfitness” playlist. That’s it. Every time you plug in your iPhone, you’ll have the latest workouts on your iPhone.

It’s also easy to use Podfitness with your Zune: just go to the Profile & Settings tab, click “Mixing Preferences”, and change iTunes to Zune. From then on, Podfitness will mix with your Zune music and download your workouts to your Zune player. Tighter integration with the Zune is coming in a future update, but for now, you can at least show off your doubleshot-colored independence from Apple while you’re working out.

I’d also recommend the cases for both iPhone and Zune from Belkin. I’ve had good luck with their stuff in the past, and they look pretty well-constructed, and are getting good reviews.

But I beg you, don’t leave your MP3 player in the cupholder of your exercise equipment. I’ve yanked more than one cellphone/MP3 player out of there and onto the floor below.

Rumor has it that Microsoft is planning a smaller, more workout-friendly Zune for this fall, so we’re obviously hoping that works out.

And what’s etiquette for phone calls on a treadmill? Personally, I’m hoping you hit the “Ignore” button, but that’s just me.

Great tips, I agree on the MP3 player in the cup-holder thing, I’ve done it myself a few times.
